It may not be the most glamorous way to help but prayer is a real, tangible way to be involved in aiding children from hard places all over the world!

Prayer List for Orphans and Children in Need Worldwide

So often there is a deep struggle with how we can be involved in the orphan crisis worldwide. There are many ways (check out this post for some ideas!) but none is so profoundly impactful as prayer.

Prayer is the means by which God works in the world. He has commanded us to pray (1 Thessalonians 5:17) and He desires to hear the prayers of His people (Proverbs 15:8).

May we never diminish the beautiful ministry of prayer for children around the world who are in need! Our God is a Father to the fatherless (Psalm 68:5-6) and He is intimately concerned with the affairs of needy children (check out this post for more about God’s heart toward children in need). When we seek God, through prayer, we bring people and circumstances to His very throne room!

With that in mind, here are some suggestions to fuel your prayer list for orphans and children in need worldwide.

  1. Pray about involvement

Seek the Lord as to whether or not He would have you be directly involved. Does He want you to adopt? Get trained to be a respite worker in order to support other families? Become a foster parent? Give financially to a reputable organization? Host an orphan for a number of weeks? There are many ways that you can be tangibly involved in aiding needy children. Pray about what the Lord would have for you.

  1. Pray for children

Pray for the children who are victims of their circumstances. Pray for supernatural protection for children in the womb. Pray for physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual protection for children who are left in orphanages and group homes worldwide. Pray for their spirits to be encouraged and strengthened. Pray that their families, whether biological or adoptive, will get everything together to be with them soon. Pray for resources for biological families. Pray that EVERY child would know the love and warmth of a Godly home.

  1. Pray about legislation

Governing officials have a hard job. They must make laws that are genuinely beneficial to all of their people. They must examine the many needs and prioritize. They must deal with their own aspirations and desires. Pray that those making and passing the laws would be selfless. Pray that they would take an honest look at the children in need under their care and value EVERY life from conception to natural death. Pray that the laws they pass would diminish the difficulties that good adoptive families face in their pursuit of the children God has for them. Pray that they would give resources to biological families that genuinely strengthen and encourage family units.

  1. Pray for strength for families

Pray for the families and individuals who are caring for children in need. Pray that they would be strengthened for the task at hand. Pray that they would willingly enter into their children’s lives and the lives of those they work with to help them deal with and come through their trauma. Pray that they would be sources of blessing and inspiration to the children they encounter. Pray that they would be refreshed in their own souls. Pray that they would be slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love. Pray that they would see clearly what their children are dealing with and face it with wisdom.

  1. Pray for more adoptive/foster/and orphan care workers

Pray that families in your church would get involved. Pray that Christians in your community would get involved. Pray that God would raise up Christians around the world who value ALL lives and seek to do good. Pray that you and the Christians who are around you would be known as people who follow Micah 6:8 and consequently act justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with God. Pray that God would raise up enough families so that there is no waiting list of children worldwide and instead only a waiting list of good families.

  1. Pray for information

Pray that information would be readily accessible so that no one can claim ignorance. Pray that real scientific evidence would be available to mothers who are facing the decision of whether or not to abort as well as Biblical truth. Pray that clear information about the foster care system, the orphan crisis, and the abortion epidemic would be available to all people. Pray for government leaders to be confronted with real information, statistics, and stories from real people. Pray that families would know the realities of the suffering they are entering into as they come alongside children from hard places. Pray that solid resources would be extended so that all those working with children would be equipped to enter their suffering with them.

  1. Pray for compassion

Pray that believers everywhere would look on the lives of those who are in need from the womb to the grave with great compassion the way Christ did (Matthew 9:36). Pray that we would lead our communities by valuing the lives of image bearers in a special way and genuinely seeking their good. Pray that the compassion and empathy we feel would fuel action and change.

  1. Pray for change

Pray that real change would happen in the world. Pray that Christ would work on behalf of all of these dear ones so that they could grow up to hear and understand the gospel. Pray that hearts would be changed, social policies would be changed, and whole societies would be changed. Pray that we would, as a world, genuinely value the things that God values. Pray for repentance for believers and unbelievers and pray that our repentance leads to genuine change.

Thank you for desiring to pray for children in need! The situations that children are facing all over the world and in our own backyards is heart breaking. Check out this post for a real life look at what orphans in eastern Europe are dealing with.
