We have the opportunity to celebrate the welcome that is adoption, foster, and orphan care ministry. The doctrine of adoption is an overflow of the hospitable nature of our God. Adoption and care for children in all capacities should be an overflow of the hospitable nature of believers.

Welcome Home: A New Series from Hospitable Homemaker that Celebrates the Welcome that is Adoption, Foster, and Orphan Care Ministry

Exciting News

I am so excited to announce to you our latest blog news!! You may have already gotten a bunch of this information earlier in the week on our Facebook page (and I hope you did!) but just in case you didn’t, keep reading!

About a year and a half ago I began to pray about the possibility of adoption. My husband and I always discussed it but it was a far off discussion, a someday we would consider it kind of thing. I prayed about whether or not this was the time for our family. A year into praying my husband told me he thought we should consider adoption (for more about our story, check out this post).

The Situation Around the World

Since then we have been walking through the adoption home study process have begun to educate ourselves about the orphan crisis worldwide. Our hearts have been broken. There are millions of orphans worldwide.

Beyond that, in America and many other countries, pregnancy is expendable. People express terrible opinions and make harsh comments to women they do not believe should be pregnant but all of that can be avoided if you simply “terminate” a pregnancy. Life seems so much easier that way. Forget that you are taking a life. Birthmothers end up with a terrible stigma but those who terminate do not. That is a heartbreaking reality.

Birthmothers are strong women who choose to love the children in their wombs enough to go through deep sorrow themselves.

In America, the foster care system has many flaws. 25,000 children age out of the system every year. Over 100,000 children are ready to be adopted right now. Over 400,000 children are in foster care throughout the country.

These children are treated as if the problems they face are of their own making. They face removal from the homes they know with unknown prospects and harsh realities.

Our Motivation for Welcome

If Christians stood together to welcome children from these places, to stand with single parents, and birthparents, and adoptive parents, couldn’t the world look so much different? If we were truly educated and given the opportunity to stand upon the tenants of Scripture and heard stories of the amazing work God is doing throughout the world, wouldn’t we be motivated to join in?

The truth is, if we are looking for lasting motivation, we must look to the person of Christ. Romans 15:7 says that we are to welcome others as Christ welcomes us for the glory of God. How does Christ welcome us? Does He wave at us from across the cosmos? No. He stepped into His creation, took on a physical body, lived a sinless life, died on the Cross, rose from the grave, and then He tells us that He is going to prepare a place for us (John 14:2-3). He made the way completely for us to be welcomed into His hospitable home forever, not as strangers, or even as guests, but as chosen family, redeemed, and welcomed.

The doctrine of adoption is an overflow of the hospitable nature of our God. Adoption and care for children in all capacities should be an overflow of the hospitable nature of believers.

It is this truth which grips the hearts of believers worldwide to get involved in care for the “least of these” in any capacity.

As these statistics and this truth began to settle on our hearts as a family, we prayed through what the Lord would have for us. And it was through this journey that our new series was born.
